Somehow – Two Months

Somehow – I’m not quite sure how – I have been in the Dominican Republic for 2 months. What?! I’m seriously amazed that so much time has already passed.

This week I’ve needed to remind myself that the Lord is sovereign. He is both the noun and the adjective of this word. He is “a person who has supreme power or authority” AND He is also “above all others in character, importance, excellence, etc.” His position as Creator and Lord doesn’t change based on the circumstances of my life. His character, holiness, and ability to change hearts doesn’t change based on the circumstances of my life. This has been important to me as I have reflected on “V” leaving because I’ve needed to realize that despite feeling sad, or disappointed, or worried about this situation, God is still God and He hasn’t stopped moving in her life, and in the lives of the other LH women, and in my life.

BALANCE was my word during my senior year of college, and it has still been cropping up in my journaling and conversations. One thing I think the Lord is showing me is the balance between expecting Him to show up in mighty ways and the day-in-day-out work of missions. God is present with me when my schedule is the same as last week; when the mornings consist of cutting string so someone else can make necklaces out of it; when we clean the house thoroughly every Saturday morning; when I feel like the tasks I’m doing have little importance. And at the same time, I don’t think He wants me to get comfortable with my routine to the point where I’m not being challenged, or not looking for areas where growth and change are possible. I’ve been working alongside the ministry of LH for 2 months now, and I want to continue seeking the Lord in ways that I can help more – and have that come from a place of not seeking recognition for myself, but desiring to share more of Christ with the women and kids.

Last Friday we had a pool party at SCORE for one of the women who is leaving the ministry because she got a job. It was fun to see the women and kids get to let loose a bit as we celebrated the next step in “ME’s” life.

On Monday I went to the capitol with Erica and Yajaida to buy jewelry supplies, and we gave ourselves a treat after by going to Krispy Kreme. It is the most American place I have visited since being here, and I got ICED COFFEE. So for that moment, my desire for Starbucks was satisfied.

Since I’ve been here for 2 months, I think it’s about time I made some kind of list. So, here goes.

Things I Miss:

-Wearing my hair down

-The student section of Spartan Stadium

-Starbucks

-Good milk and good ice cream (so basically, Cook’s Farm Dairy)

-The sensation of being cold

-Worshiping in English

Things I Like Here:

-Lemon muffins from the Lily House bakery

-Tuesday night Bible Study with my missionary friends

-Water games with the kids

-Learning to make jewelry

-When I understand what someone says in Spanish

-Rainstorms/thunderstorms/the beautiful sky

Ways you can be praying:

  • Women’s Week is next week! And my role has changed – I’m now going to be the “official” photographer for the conference. This means I’ll be staying over at the hotel and going out with different groups during the day to take pictures and video. I’ll be getting the chance to see some of the other ministries, which is exciting since I’ve pretty much been at LH since being here. Please just pray for all the final details to come together, for those of us working on preparations not to be stressed out or worried, and for the Holy Spirit to already be preparing the hearts of the women from the US who are coming, and everyone we will come in contact with while they are here.
  • Pray for me as I begin the process of discerning whether I will be returning to the DR after the first of the year.

As always, I am thankful for each and every one of you.

  1. So excited for you to be the photographer for next week’s Mission Conference. I know the Lord will bless you and your photos will be a blessing to many. Thank you for keeping us up to date. Things I miss since you’ve been gone: YOU!

  2. So great to read your weekly updates. Two months have passed already? I’m sure God is working in and through you, even in the mundane tasks that seem at the time simple. Wish I could send you some milk and ice cream to share with the ladies. Will be praying for direction for you. Love and miss you.
